PDC Working Principle

How PDC cutters break plastic, brittle, and hard abrasive formations, and why cambered cutters suit the hardest rock.

Plastic formations

In plastic formations, or rock that behaves plastically under stress, the PDC working edge makes the rock ahead break up internally or flow plastically under torsion and drilling pressure. The broken rock forms debris that separates from the rock substrate.

Brittle formations

In brittle formations, the stress generated by the PDC working edge makes the rock crush brittlely under strain and shear force, with high efficiency.

Hard and abrasive formations

In hard and abrasive formations, a camber-shaped PDC is generally the best choice to avoid fragmentation and delamination caused by the lower pressure resistance of the PDC working edge. The cambered surface fractures rock by pressing and scraping, so the working edge is not likely to break, but with a lower drilling rate.
